The cash conversion cycle in Indian hotels
What is CCC?
Time it takes for your hotel to convert inventory investments into cash receipts. Measures how long cash is “trapped” in operations.
Formula: CCC = DIO + DSO - DPO
• DIO: Days Inventory Outstanding
• DSO: Days Sales Outstanding
• DPO: Days Payable Outstanding
Real Example - 4-Star Gurgaon Hotel:
• Inventory: ₹35L, COGS: ₹2.5Cr, A/R: ₹22L, Revenue: ₹9.5Cr, A/P: ₹14L
• DIO = 51 days | DSO = 8 days | DPO = 20 days
• CCC = 39 days (39 days for every rupee to return as cash)
Indian Industry Benchmarks:
• 5-Star: 30-45 days
• 4-Star Business: 20-35 days
• Resorts: 40-60 days
• Budget: 15-28 days
Key Management Insights:
🎯 Optimization Impact: 10-day CCC reduction on ₹50Cr revenue = ₹1.4Cr cash freed up
📊 Component Analysis:
• High DIO: Overstocking, poor forecasting → Local sourcing, daily inventory
• High DSO: Payment delays, long cycles → Advance payments, better terms
• Low DPO: Quick supplier payments → Negotiate 30-45 day terms
Indian Market Specifics:
• Seasonal variations: Wedding season DSO spikes
• Regional differences: North India higher DSO, South better inventory turnover
• Climate impact: Monsoon inventory challenges
Red Flags:
🚨 CCC > 65 days = Immediate intervention
🚨 Increasing trends = Efficiency decline
🚨 Monsoon/festival spikes = Seasonal mismanagement
Strategic Value:
✅ Reduced bank credit dependence
✅ Better seasonal cash management
✅ Improved acquisition analysis
✅ Enhanced working capital optimization
Excel Tip: Track monthly CCC with GST timing, festival adjustments, and regional supplier terms.
Bottom Line: CCC mastery is crucial for maintaining liquidity across India’s seasonal hospitality fluctuations while minimizing expensive overdraft facilities.
