“Which school, and does it matter?”
It matters less than the first three jobs. Choose a school with real industry placements and a network in the markets you want to work in.

2 · What we know
“Which school, and does it matter?”
It matters less than the first three jobs. Choose a school with real industry placements and a network in the markets you want to work in.
“What should I do first?”
Learn the operation from the floor up, in great houses, under demanding managers. Rotate through rooms and food and beverage before you specialise.
“What does it take to become a GM?”
Profit-and-loss ownership, a commercial department under your belt, and a record of teams who grew under you.
“How do I move into asset management?”
Learn to read a hotel as an investment: USALI, valuation, agreements and capital. Then work for an owner, not an operator.
“Why am I not shortlisted?”
Because the CV lists duties. Write results with numbers, and keep it to two pages.
