Strategy 101: thought starters
We still cling to the idea that strategy should deliver certainty.
As if the right model, the right deck, or the right consultant will produce a perfect plan.
But in hospitality, travel, wellness, and dining — the ground shifts while you’re still presenting slide 12.
Markets are emotional. Demand is fluid. Taste is cultural.
And trends don’t send calendar invites.
The most dangerous assumption in our industry?
That strategy is a blueprint — instead of a living system.
A few thought starters — not absolute truths:
• What if we designed strategy like we design menus? Seasonal, adaptive, evolving
• What if guest behaviour became a signal — not a statistic?
• What if innovation was a ritual — not a workshop?
• What if growth came through intimacy, not scale?
• What if loyalty was trust, not points?
A better way to think and act:
1. Make strategy a series of testable bets
2. Watch for early cues — not just quarterly reports
3. Adapt faster than you defend — learn loudly and often
In this business, we build for humans.
Humans change.
So must our strategies.
We don’t need to predict the future.
We need to stay in conversation with it.
Kapil Chopra taught me the art of failing fast and being eloquent about it - get on with it if it’s not working don’t obsess find a different way !! (thank you Kapil)
